Club Pictures and News This is a simplified guide to changes introduced by the English Bridge Union. The changes came into effect on the 1st August 2006, but directors will initially be lenient over lapses. There are nine things to get used to, and they are worth learning.
Announcements: a new idea. In five rather common situations, you need to announce what your partner's bid means. You do this before your right-hand opponent calls. Thus: 1. Partner opens one No Trump. | You say '12-14' or '15-17' or whatever your range is. | 2. Partner opens two of a suit, natural, showing the suit | You say 'weak' or 'strong' as appropriate |
If playing Stayman and red suit transfers, you open one No Trump and: 3. Partners bids two Clubs | You say 'Stayman' | 4. Partner bids two Diamonds | You say 'Transfer to Hearts'. | 5. Partner bids two Hearts | You say 'Transfer to Spades'. (And your partner should not alert when you complete the transfer.) |
That's all there is to announcing.
Alerting is reduced too:
6. If partner opens one Club or one Diamond, promising at least three cards in that suit, then the bid should not be alerted.
7. Bids above three No Trumps (eg Blackwood, Gerber, splinters) should not be alerted.
Finally, the alerting of double(below three No Trumps) is simplified
8. If opponents bid a suit (natural, showing length in the suit) then a take-out double should not be alerted; (but a penalty double should).
9. If opponents bid No Trumps, or bid a suit (artificial, not showing lenght in the suit) then a penalty double (showing strength in the suit) should not be alerted; but a take-out double should.
